Il principe è stato rapito. Il suo autista ucciso. Non mi ricordo bene quando l'ho conosciuto. E' l'amico di b1, quello che in tanti momenti afghani è riuscito a farci amare il suo paese. Con lei ci si è messo proprio di impegno, a me bastavano i racconti suoi e del suo amico aghano londinese, le fughe in bicicletta durante la guerra civile, Massud, la caduta del regime dei Talebani, la sua ascesa al potere. Ricordo un pranzo nel 2002 nella casetta dell'amico a kabul che ci ha rimpito di cose buona da mangiare mentre io con una mano spazzavo via mosche moleste. Faceva un gran caldo. Ricordo una cena qualche mese fa invece al Serena Hotel, prima che arrivasse il Kamikaze, dove B1 mi ha costretta a fare il terzo incomodo. Deve avermi odiato il povero principe perché non li ho mai lasciati soli. E' un burbero con la sua barbona e i suoi occhietti vivaci. Ride a denti stretti e osserva tutto quello che lo circonda. Tranne ieri, colto da un'imboscata non lontano dal suo ufficio, stava per andarsene dopo tanti anni da Peshawar, promosso a Islamabad. Un'altra volta, sempre a Kabul avevamo conosciuto il suocero del Principe, legato al vero re Afghano, era venuto nella nostra stanza all'Intercontinental Hotel una sera, e B1 l'aveva intervistato tranquillamente avvolta in un asciugamano dopo una doccia difficoltosa come lo erano all'inizio a Kabul. Il vecchio non aveva fatto una piega, si era seduto su una sedia sgangherata, senza neanche i braccioli, mentre barbara nel suo asciugamano giallo, gli faceva le domande, io scrivevo visto che lei con una mano teneva stretto l'asciugamano in quella stanza dalle tende bucate dai proiettili e senza soffitto, con una moquette che poteva raccontare la storia dell'Afghanistan. Il principe per noi è un po' l'Afghanistan che ci piace (a b1 di più), quello fatto di gente gentile, curiosa, ma anche orgogliosa, fiera, combattente. Un altro amico inghiottito da questa guerra, da questa violenza che ha spazzato anche l'albergo dove abbiamo trascorso tanto tempo, dove ho imparato uscita da Gerusalemme a fare questo mestiere. Ci sarebbero tante cose da dire sul Principe, B1 potrebbe farlo meglio di me, ma quello che conta è che è una brava persona con tutte le sfacettature e i limiti che può avere questa definizione. E' un afgano di quelli che vale la pena di incontrare, di quelli che ti offrono la propria terra e te la fanno amare proprio perché ci sono persone come lui. Buonanotte a tutti, B.

CAIRO, Egypt — The Al-Jazeera television network has broadcast a film clip of kidnapped Canadian journalist Amanda Lindhout and an Australian colleague. Lindhout, a freelance television and print reporter from Sylvan Lake, Alta., and photographer Nigel Brennan, were abducted almost a month ago while on assignment in Somalia. The Al-Jazeera video shows Lindhout wearing an Arab robe and surrounded by gunmen. She is shown speaking to the camera but the video's soundtrack was not aired. Al-Jazeera says the two appeared in the video to appeal to their governments to work for their release. The Qatar-based TV network says their kidnappers are members of the so-called Mujahedeen of Somalia, which accuses the governments of Australia and Canada of "contributing to the destruction of Somalia." The journalists were abducted Aug. 23, along with a Somali journalist acting as their translator, and two Somali guards, while travelling to Elasha, some 20 kilometres southwest of the capital Mogadishu. Reporters Without Borders in Montreal said earlier this month that the kidnappers had demanded $2.5 million for the release of the three journalists.

Gwendolyn Richards Canwest News Service Monday, September 08, 2008 CALGARY - Kidnappers holding an Alberta journalist in Somalia have demanded a $2.5-million US ransom in exchange for her release, a local chief in contact with the abductors said Sunday. Dahir Farah has been participating in negotiations to free Amanda Lindhout - a 27-year-old journalist from Sylvan Lake, Atla. working out of Baghdad - Australian photojournalist Nigel Brennan and their Somali fixer, who were all abducted on August 23. The three were on the road between the capital Mogadishu and Afgoye, when they were kidnapped at gunpoint. "The kidnappers demanded $2.5 million (US) and we are trying to secure their release," Farah said. News of the ransom demand was welcomed back in Calgary by Lindhout's friend Jeremy Kroeker, who said he is encouraged by the development. "It is good news," he said Sunday. "It means they see her as a commodity. They're not trying to make a political statement." The fact the abductors want money also means they will take good care of Lindhout and not do anything rash, he added. "The fact that there's dialogue is also very encouraging. That means someone out there knows who has her," said Kroeker. Kroeker met Lindhout last winter in Damascus while he was on a motorcycle tour. He said Lindhout was a "strong and strong-willed" woman. Kroeker has been trying to stay on top of developments as they unfold and has read about similar cases. While optimistic, he said he is prepared for a lengthy delay in Lindhout's release. "Some other negotiations in Somalia took weeks or months," he said. Meanwhile, another person claiming to be an intermediary for the kidnappers, contacted Agence France-Presse and spoke of the same ransom demand. He also allowed two people claiming to be the foreign journalists to speak briefly. "I'm Amanda, the Canadian journalist. Our health situation is very well for the time being," Lindhout purportedly said. A man claiming to be Brennan said: "We are very well now mentally and physically." They were speaking from an undisclosed location. "We need a ransom of $2.5 million to free the hostages," said the intermediary, Adan Nur Siad, who added that he had been in touch with representatives of the Australian police in Nairobi. Journalists and humanitarian workers are frequently abducted in Somalia, a country torn apart by unrest since 1991. Most kidnappings include ransom demands.
